Up at 8:30 for no reason at all. Hard to get back to sleep when you wake up on these things. I usually don’t have a problem falling alseep at night, but once you wake up…your up. Dave got up and went to the store. Sat up leaning on the anvil cases which are put right in the doorway, watched Olympics on TV…freefall skiing or some shit. Crash and burn, buggers! I thought I would be looking forward to a day off, but now I wish we were playing tonight. Ate another granola bar and put my bed away…which goes in the closet in Matt and Base’s room.
Did a bunch of laundry today. There is no dryer’s that I can see in these place’s. You hang your clothes outside on this fold-up plastic rack with clothespin things hanging from it. Hung stuff outside..wonder how you dry stuff in the winter..inside, I guess. Matt and Base went to the store when they got up. Dave returned and brought me a vhs tape so I can record some TV. Great stuff, this TV…especially the commercials. Matt and Base came back. We were all ready to go find something to eat…but we had to wait on Matt to take a freakin’ shower.
Went walking down the main road. It’s called Riki Tiki Tavy or something like that. Was hoping we would have a nice day to walk around, but it was cold and windy out. Stopped at this little place called Freshness Burger. We’re not as brave without our interpreter. Went in and pointed at pictures we’d like to eat and sat in the little triangular table area. They brought our food out to us, had a cheeseburger and most of Base’s fries. He was too busy searching for table spices…one was called “jerk”.
Walked into the busy part of Shinjuku..they all look pretty busy to me…into a big department store. By big, I mean twelve floors. Hard to describe the amount of people around here. Not sure who was looking for what, but we ended up on the floor that had toys on it. Lots of Disney stuff, Ultraman, and an endcap of Bandai Godzilla stuff. Kids were all lined up to play this display video learning thing. Dave could’nt find any postcards here, and we took off. Only too happy to get out of there. Malls give me the creeps..foreign ones even more.
Next to the mall they had little backways and sidestreets with lots of little shops. Funny thing I thought about them was they were all open fronts, they must close up at night, but its 40 something outside and everyone is shopping in the open. There was a pet shop, of course, only small dogs and cats…I only saw one normal sized dog here the whole time, sunglasses, boots, one shop had nothing but postcards of boy bands. Base was in this one novelty type place and saw a picture of Joe Strummer on the wall that kinda looked like Matt. So he points at the picture, and at Matt and tells the shopkeeper, “That’s him!” The guy looks at Matt and says “ You?” and he runs in the back and gets his camera. I took a picture of Base, Matt, and the shop guy for him. He was so happy, none of us had the nerve to tell him Joe Strummer’s been dead for years.
Walked some more up the Naki Daki Dori street and found a cd shop. Man, lots of cool stuff I’ve never seen before but they were asking way too much. Did’nt get anything. Kept walking, there are porn shops everywhere here…which makes no sense to us cuz everything is blacked out here. Illegal or something, so what’s the point? We went in one that was playing Queen on their PA. “I Want it All!” Kept walking, found a hobby store. Lots of neat stuff but nothing I could’nt live without. Dave found an RC Back to the Future car for Ramona. Kept going down the street past whole sections of cd and record places..you think they would space themselves out to compete better. Was tempted on a few records I saw there, but did’nt know how I would get them home. Started getting colder outside. Base and Matt took off to find an internet place, me and Dave walked back, wind was freakin’ cold. Stopped in the grocery store by our apartment. There is always someone handing out samples of something in these places. On the street they have lots of people whose job it is to hand out pamphlets and stuff. They do the arm wave thing at you and smile, and no one takes anything. Forget what day but we were in the van at a light watching this girl try to hand stuff out and no one was even looking at her, Base leaned out the window and yelled “ My God! Someone take one! Jeezz!!!” Anyway, we shopped there a while. Hard to find anything, but got some lettuce, red cheddar ( no Venezulian Beaver cheese ), bread, grapefruit juice, and a Dr. Pepper with a female robot on it.
Brought in the clothes and stuff. Yeah, I know..exciting day. Clothes dry like leather outside, my jeans feel like burlap bags or somthing. Watched TV while Dave fell asleep. Got the SG out and learned “Search and Destroy” by Iggy Pop, something we were singing the other night at Club Goodman. Matt and Base finally came back around 6. Cooked hamburgers on the stove for me and Base. They were’nt bad, just have’nt eaten this much greasy stuff lately. Matt and Dave just had pbj’s. Watched Olympic snowboarding and cheered at the wipeouts. Matt played the SG for a while and we all sang on some stuff…which is a dumb thing to do cuz I should be saving my voice for the next six nights. Base was banging his drumsticks all over the place. People started banging on the floor beneath us. Jeez…inconsiderate people. Finally saw a movie on TV, called Kassern or something like that, lots of cgi and live acting about the end of the world as usual, but it looked pretty cool although we had no clue what was going on. Stayed up a while in the kitchen checking out a book Base had brought called “ On the road with the Ramones”. Very cool, like to have it when I get back home. Base also has a knack for finding tons of porn stuff out on the street, like in giveaway racks and stuff.
Played the SG a while and watched Olympics till I fell asleep around 1. Thrillsville.
